TEKS 3.3(A)

Activities Supporting Third Grade Standard

TEKS 3.3(A): represent fractions greater than zero and less than or equal to one with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 using concrete objects and pictorial models, including strip diagrams and number lines;

Activity created by Mallory Draper:

The book used for this activity is titled Doggone Feet by Leslie Helakoski. The author takes the reader on a spin using tongue-twisters and rhymes to view what goes on in the mind of a dog. As the canine’s ‘people family’ grows, so does her dismay at having to share her space with so many feet. She soon discovers that all this new commotion brings great joy and leaves the reader with an awesome surprise ending.

This activity is geared towards students beginning to learn about fractions. After reading the story, parents can print out the activity page and the self-checking page to help their child learn to love fractions with man’s best friend – dogs! Different activities can be easily adapted to follow this one.
